GENERAL MEETING October 7, 2008

President Margaret Otis called the meeting to order at 1 pm and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Secretary’s Report:  Accepted and filed

Treasurer’s Report:
  Accepted and filed

Corresponding Secretary’s Report:  Get well cards were sent to Jane Beth Chapman, Caryl Stoker and Adele Babin.  Flowers were sent to Nina Profont on the death of her husband David.  A thank you note was received from Lynne Drummond for the gift certificate.

Membership:  Carrie Wailgum said that 95 members were present.

Program:  The December Luncheon will be at SeaView on Dec.2; cost, $30.

Civic Beautification:  Irene Mitchell thanked everyone who worked this summer on the public gardens.  Our goal is to expand on what we’ve done.  Please let Irene know your ideas and what needs any public garden has.

Chamber of Commerce:  Glee Jansen reminded members of the workshop to repair 103 town wreaths Thursday, Oct. 9 at 9:30 at the Chamber Building .   For the Oct. 16 workshop she needs more volunteers.  Since this is a “dirty job,” wear old clothes; bring garden gloves and wire cutters.  On Dec. 3 at 9:30 in Room 4 of the Community Center Linda Felice will have a workshop on Public Building Wreaths.  Please sign up.

Design Workshop:  Doris Casey reported that 15 have signed up for the Friday, Nov. 21 workshop on Fruits and Flowers, Holiday Designs at 10:00 .

Bridge Luncheon:  Mimi Foster reported the event is sold out but welcomes a wait list.  She still needs a few waitresses.   Set up will be done the day before.

Christmas Stroll:  Cathy Dillon reminded members that everlasting items need to be started now.  She needs more raffle items.  Publicity is in progress.  Sign-up sheet is in the back of the room.

Rose Garden:  The Garden Club of  Harwich is offering one-time assistance to the Rose Society on Nov. 15 to “put the Rose Garden to bed.”  Please volunteer.  The sign up sheet is in the back.

House and Garden Tour:  Joan Garriety is chairman for this joint event with the Historical Society on June 27.    We have two of six houses within walking distance of Brooks Academy.  An original watercolor by Joyce Hawk of the fountain has been donated by the artist and will be raffled off during the tour.

Newsletter:  This will go out at the Dec. 2 meeting.  Get your information in by Nov. 1 to Peg Erdlen.

Yearbooks:  Please take one for a friend who couldn’t be here.  The rest will be mailed tomorrow.

Old Business:  None

New Business: Margaret announced that Bill Cannon, President of the American Holly Society, will speak at the Harwich Community Center Saturday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m.  

Nominating Committee:  Irene Mitchell will serve as Chairman with Elaine Sampson as a member from the Board.  Gerri Schumann was nominated from the floor from the General Membership and unanimously elected.  The slate will be announced in April or May with elections in June.

      Baby Center :  Please bring donations to the Nov 4. meeting.

Federation:  From time to time the Garden Club has been a member and the Board is considering such a recommendation again.  Please notify any Board Member if you have any thoughts or ideas on becoming federated again.
